Annual “This Is Zionism” Education Campaign Aims To Fight Antisemitic Propaganda

Aug 15, 2024

Join the “This is Zionism” campaign led by CAMERA on Campus. The annual campaign seeks to empower students and educate their peers on Israel and the meaning of Zionism.

There is too much hate in this world – and a large portion of that comes from not understanding or even knowing both sides of the story. Today, a lot of people are promoting anti-Jewish propaganda because that is what mainstream media is showing. To combat this misinformation, a non-partisan organization is taking a stand with its latest Zionism campaign.

What is Zionism?

CAMERA on Campus announces the continuation of its “This Is Zionism” campaign, which was originally conceived to educate students and the general public about the meaning of Zionism.

Do you know that 24% of the American population holds strong antisemitic beliefs, according to the Anti-Defamation League? Quite surprisingly, the same study found that younger Americans are more likely to endorse anti-Jewish tropes. Additionally, over 42% of Americans either have a friend or family member who dislikes Jews (23.2%) or find it socially acceptable to support Hamas (27.2%).

“This Is Zionism” is a response to anti-Jewish propaganda and provides support for students who believe in the right of Jewish people to self-determination in their indigenous homeland.

Meaning of Zionism

The educational and awareness campaign is complemented by a website (zionism.me) that guides students to better understand Zionism and how to respond to current threats against it. The team explains that the most powerful weapon against ignorance is education.

Sasha Chernyak, the content and campaigns manager for CAMERA on Campus, emphasizes that the “false equation of Zionism to something harmful and nefarious has fueled antisemitic attacks against Zionist students.” The campaign seeks to let more people know the true meaning of Zionism and the right of Jews to live in their homeland.

CAMERA on Campus highlights various anti-Jewish incidents in the last few months, from the Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians on October 7 to the attack of IDF search and rescue officer Yuval Klein on April 2 at Florida State University. They explain that students who would otherwise maintain a neutral stance on the current political climate are influenced by popular media to view all Jews as harmful.

Understanding Zionism

To address this constant spread of misinformation, CAMERA on Campus continues its mission of providing accurate and unbiased coverage of Israel and the Middle East.

As explained by their spokesperson, "CAMERA fosters rigorous reporting while educating news consumers about Middle East issues and the role of the media. Because public opinion ultimately shapes public policy, distorted news coverage that misleads the public can be detrimental to sound policymaking. A non-partisan organization, CAMERA takes no position concerning American or Israeli political issues or about ultimate solutions to the Arab-Israeli conflict."

“This is Zionism” provides students with the resources they need to develop a more objective mindset of the current geopolitical tension.

CAMERA also offers two education programs, the CAMERA Fellowship and the CAMERA on Campus Coalition.

Binghamton University CAMERA Fellow Aviad Levy ends with, "Zionism is an inextricable part of our identity and sense of peoplehood. In a time when Jewish people around the world need to stand together, CAMERA on Campus’ efforts are a positive step toward strengthening Jewish communities on campuses everywhere.”

All “This is Zionism” social media will be shared on @cameraoncampus on Facebook, Instagram, X and LinkedIn.
