Apple iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max: 5G and a big change in design for these two latest models

Nov 25, 2020

Once again, Apple has gone back to betting on two versions of its higher-end iPhone models. However this time there are more changes than expected, not only in size and battery as usual.

These are the most ambitious mobiles of the manufacturer for 2020 and also the largest, at least speaking of the Max that integrates the longest diagonal that we have seen in an iPhone historically. They also come with the latest Apple processor and incorporating compatibility with the 5G network, something that we had not seen in Apple mobiles until this year.

They are the direct successors of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, although we will see that the design undergoes very notable changes (especially speaking of a brand that is not characterized by radical variations).

The materials are still glass for the back and steel for the edges. What we do not see is the supposed reduction of the notch, which remains as up to now being quite large compared to what we usually see in the shape of a "U".

Of course, the ceramic layer that we have also seen in the iPhone 12 is added and that according to the brand gives an unprecedented resistance. It will be necessary to see if this is the case, as well as we will also have to check if that design is still comfortable in hand.

We see 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays for the standard Pro and 6.7-inch for the Max. The resolution is 2,532 x 1,170 pixels and 2,778 x 1,184 pixels respectively, leaving about 460 pixels per inch.

As usual, Apple uses the iPhone to release its own processor, although being strict this time we already saw it in the new iPad Air. It is the Apple A14 Bionic, built in 5 nanometers, but as usual, we do not know the RAM of any of the models. Although the novelty has been emphasized like almost nothing else today: 5G.

What we have checked is that the minimum storage is 128 GB, with versions also of 256 GB and 512 GB. There is no battery data either, but we know that these iPhones from the Pro line also take advantage of the new MagSafe wireless charging feature. This MagSafe allows a wireless charging of up to 15 W, while the chargers with the Qi standard allow a charge of up to 7.5 W. If instead a cable is used for fast charging, this can be up to 50% in half an hour with an adapter of 20 W or more.

Apple maintains in its top-of-the-range smartphones the system of three rear cameras that we saw last year. These are a wide angle camera, an ultra wide angle camera, and a telephoto lens. The only difference between the two models is that the larger one has optical image stabilization by sensor shift.

In addition to the technical improvements that we have seen in the specifications, the highlight of the cameras this year is in the improvements of night photos and videos. Thanks to the wide-angle camera aperture (ƒ / 1.6), the system captures more light for clearer and more detailed photos at night. To this must be added the new LiDAR, which scans the environment to create a more detailed depth map regardless of whether it is night or day. Outcome? Among others the power to take pictures in night portrait mode.

Speaking of the Pro Max, the sensor is 47% larger than previous (according to Apple) with 1.7μm pixels, promising an 87% improvement in low light conditions. In addition, the telephoto lens of the 12 Max has a focal length of 65 millimeters and the total zoom of the system is 5x, as described by the brand.

There are some improvements that will come to the two iPhone 12 Pro, such as the new ProRAW function, which combines Apple's multi-stream processing and computational photography with the RAW file type and its capabilities. This means that users can edit color, detail level, and dynamic range natively on the iPhone or on another computer.

Apple also takes heart with the video and claims that these iPhone 12 Pro are the world's first devices with Dolby Vision end-to-end and HDR recording with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps. Also, in the Pro Max we see an improved optical stabilization system.
