Arlington health insurance updates ACA payment deadlines during coronavirus

May 12, 2020

Rick Thornton, a health insurance agent in Arlington, says continued changes in long-standing healthcare laws is a sign that lawmakers are willing to do all they can to help Americans during the pandemic.

Health insurance in Arlington and similar Affordable Care Act plans can now extend payment deadlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving struggling Americans — including those who are jobless and/or previously uninsured — even more relief and protection as fears amid the coronavirus crisis mount.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced the move late last month, saying that it will exercise enforcement discretion if a health insurer on the ACA exchanges extends premium payment deadlines and delays cancellations of coverage for non-payment. The extension also applies to telehealth services and people who get premium tax credit subsidies, and state-based exchanges are also being encouraged to follow suit. The action represents one of many methods aimed at loosening ACA regulations. Eleven of the 12 states and the District of Columbia that have ACA exchanges, including Arlington health insurance, are now offering special enrollment periods outside the normal window to ensure as many people as possible have coverage for coronavirus testing and treatment. Special enrollments are typically used in situations where there has been a natural disaster, job loss, or other life-changing event. Naturally, the latest pandemic qualifies, and these tests and treatment are critical in the fight against the spread of the virus.

Rick Thornton, an Arlington health insurance agent, points out for those who are curious that the federal government oversees healthcare exchanges in the other 38 states, and so far, lawmakers haven’t opened special enrollment periods for those states or updated premium payment deadlines since the start of the pandemic. With that being said, he believes all states will soon fall in line with so that everything is the same nationwide. This is a huge opportunity to help millions of Americans in what is undoubtedly uncharted territory for our country.
