Best Implant Strategies For Fully Edentulous Clients: Zygomatic & Traditional

Oct 14, 2023

Learn the newest techniques for treating fully edentulous clients, in this new clinician’s guide from Dr. Saj Jivraj of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute (805-800-8289) and the British Dental Journal. It explains each traditional and zygomatic strategy step-by-step and includes important information about immediate loading.

In my experience, there are only three things that are absolutely certain when it comes to dental clients.

  1. They all want the latest techniques, even if they're not well-researched, tested, or proven yet.
  2. They assume that dental professionals can work miracles (and sometimes they can).
  3. They're concerned about the pain.

The good news is, that the latest techniques that we're going to talk about are well-researched, well-tested, and well-proven - even if they're not used as commonly as they should be, yet.

While the newest techniques won't actually produce miracles, they are much improved, and your patients will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

As for the pain, well, some things never change, even with all the modern sedation options. Although, with immediate loading (we'll discuss that in a minute) and sedation options, it is possible for them to fall asleep in the chair, and wake up with their new teeth already installed.

I'm getting ahead of myself though, I haven't even introduced the topic of today's blog.

It's a new clinician's guide from the British Dental Journal (BDJ) that discusses all the latest techniques for graftless implant strategies. You may have heard of it, it's called Graftless Solutions for the Edentulous Patient, and it's edited by Dr, Saj Jivraj.

If that name sounds familiar, you may have seen him recently featured on Fox and PBS, or you may have attended one of his lectures. Dr. Jivraj works at the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in California but teaches these techniques both nationally and internationally.

You can learn more about Graftless Solutions for the Edentulous Patient, or pick up your own copy, at https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-32847-3

The full guide covers a wide range of new techniques, the rationale behind each, and step-by-step descriptions of each process. While many of these techniques are new, they are already in use in many clinics around the world, including Dr. Jivaj’s practice, the Anacapa Dental Art Institute.

Of course, if you think you may be familiar with some of the content, you can always browse the table of contents to get a quick idea of the techniques, at the link I shared above.

Or, you can see them in action at the Anacapa Dental Art Institute, where Dr. Jivraj offers these new implant techniques as an “All-On-4” service. It's pretty popular because it provides his clients with a full arch restoration in a single day, with immediate loading - and we all know how people feel about spending even a few minutes in public without their dentures.

That's not the only benefit of course, or even the greatest one, even if it's the one that most patients care about. What really matters, is that these new techniques can reduce the surgical trauma to your patients, by reducing or eliminating the need for bone grafts.

It also provides important details about immediate loading, the scientific basis for this technique, and the biomechanics of combining it with graftless implants.

It's not all about the implant surgery though - the new book covers the entire process, from planning to completion, including the prostheses. It discusses a range of materials and fabrication techniques, as well as aesthetic considerations that are important for clients with fixed prostheses.

One interesting thing to note is that when Dr. Jivraj provides these services to his clients, he offers them not only a warranty on their new dentures - but also a warranty on their new implants.

The book discusses this too, with key details about the long-term reliability of these methods, along with the suggested maintenance techniques that have allowed Dr. Jivraj to offer warranties with these new techniques.

Of course, no matter how improved they are, and these new techniques have been shown to have a high level of success, there is always a chance for complications. The clinician's guide also contains important information about the most likely issues, how to avoid them, and how to treat them.

An excerpt from the BDJ explains, “This book, designed to meet the needs of clinicians and now in an extensively revised second edition, clearly explains the rationale and technique for the rehabilitation of fully edentulous patients utilizing traditional graftless concepts as well as zygomatic implant strategies when posterior support cannot be achieved by the former means.”

Speaking of improvements, you don't need to go back to school for 4 more years to learn these new techniques, you can have them delivered right to your door - and that's something I think we can all agree is a great advancement.
