Calgary Prostate Cancer Support: Join The September Meeting For Education

Sep 6, 2024

Prostaid Calgary has announced their September meeting schedule, and are inviting you to attend if you are interested in free information about prostate cancer and general health.

Understanding Prostate Cancer

Did you know that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime? It is the most common cancer in men by a significant margin. The problem is so prevalent that nearly $25 billion is invested globally every year to research treatments and cures, with the Prostate Cancer Foundation alone awarding 2,250 grants for projects in 2023.

Despite these efforts, prostate cancer continues to impact hundreds of millions of lives worldwide between patients, their families, and the doctors who work so hard to extend the lives of those suffering. Thanks to their diligent efforts, despite its high incidence, prostate cancer is also one of the least deadly cancers in terms of 5-year relative survival rate. However, this does not diminish the difficulties experienced by both patients and their loved ones as they walk the path toward remission together.

If your life has been impacted by this disease, please know that you are not alone. Support is readily available in Calgary and beyond, including free resources, material assistance, and more - you just need to know where to look.

Prostaid Calgary: Your Prostate Cancer Resource

Prostaid Calgary is one such organization dedicated to ensuring that you fully understand the road ahead and can get the emotional and material support necessary to continue forward with confidence. Their monthly meetings and free resources are an invaluable opportunity to get educated on the best ways to support your loved one as they undergo treatment, among other health-related topics.

Join Prostaid For An Educational Meeting

As per a recent announcement, the organization's September meeting will be held on the 18th and will feature a guest appearance by audiology specialist Dr. Carrie Scarff. During the meeting, she will share insights into new findings regarding how hearing and brain plasticity are related, as well as strategies to prevent tinnitus and other disorders.

This formal meeting will be conducted in addition to the regular support meetings held by Postaid for the caregivers and spouses of prostate cancer patients. Those meetings are announced on a regular basis and are conducted in person at the CKE Community Centre near Chinook Park.

Prostaid & Their Objectives

Dr. Scarff’s appearance will continue Prostaid’s recent mission, which has been to expand the advice and insights they share beyond the realm of prostate cancer into associated fields and beyond. In this way, they hope to further participants’ understanding of the body and health overall, encouraging a model of care that is more complete and comprehensive as a result.

The overall mission of Prostaid is to educate Calgary locals about the warning signs of prostate cancer, innovations in treatment, and how and where to get tested. To that end, they also publish a newsletter detailing recent developments in the field and other relevant news which can be subscribed to on the organization’s website.

The organization’s mission statement is as follows, “Our objective is to assist and support patients, families and friends by informing, empathizing and reassuring men on their journey with prostate cancer. By sharing our experiences with our own cancer we lift our spirits and strengthen our resolve to fight for quality of life and a cure.”
