The 1990s were a fruitful time for high-quality animated television shows. Central to their popularity was the performances of the voice actors behind the characters. To shine a spotlight on some of those performances, Voices recently shared a blog listing some of their favorites.
The blog, authored by resident Voices writer Keaton Robbins, calls attention to six voice over performances from iconic 1990s cartoons and details what made each one memorable. It also includes brief video clips of the voice actors performing their parts and speaking about the roles.

According to Robbins, the 1990s were a golden age for animation voice overs. “A slew of talented voice actors lent their voices to some of the most iconic animated series of all time. From classic shows like ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ and ‘The Simpsons’ to cult favorites like ‘Animaniacs’, the 1990s saw a rise in the quality of voice-acting in animated productions.”
Of the six voice actors featured in the blog, the two most recognizable are Mark Hamill and Nancy Cartwright. Hamill—who rose to fame as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga—voiced The Joker in ‘Batman: The Animated Series’, which Robbins considers “one of the greatest voice acting performances of all time.” He also praises Cartwright, whose long-time work as Bart Simpson “made the character an instant classic.”
Also featured in the blog for his performances in ‘The Simpsons’, is Saturday Night Live alumnus Phil Hartman. Hartman voiced the characters Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, who together were involved in some of Simpsons fans’ favorite moments.
To round out the blog, Robbins includes Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille, and Cree Summer. Paulsen and MacNeille worked together on the same show, ‘The Animaniacs’, portraying siblings Yakko and Dot Warner respectively. Summer played the adorable Elmyra Duff in ‘Tiny Toon Adventures’, another Warner Bros. production.
With all of the performances in the blog, Robbins points out what makes them special. For example, with Hamill, Robbins loved the "manic energy and unpredictability" that he brought to the Joker, Batman's oldest nemesis, and one who has been portrayed several times. Similarly, it was the "mischievousness and rebelliousness" that Cartwright gave to Bart Simpson which made us all fall in love with him.
“The 1990s were a time when animation voice overs reached new heights,” said Robbins. “The talent and skill of the voice actors behind some of the most iconic animated characters of all time helped make these shows unforgettable.”
Voices published the blog not only as a conversation starter but as a way of drawing attention to the millions of untapped voice actors they have on their platform looking for work. Their hope is for the creator of the next Simpsons or Animaniacs to be able to more easily find their next Bart Simpson or Yakko.
