Johansen highlights her latest favorite Christian cozy mysteries and explains why she is drawn to this niche genre, offering a novelist’s insights into what makes them so appealing.

Christian Mysteries Offer Respectable, Elevating Entertainment

Johansen values Christian mysteries for their combination of enjoyability and respectability. As with most mysteries, the characters are busy unraveling secrets, and you're drawn into solving the puzzle of the plot before the detective does. At the same time, these stories maintain a sense of decorum by steering clear of nasty language and extreme violence for a more wholesome, tactful reading experience.

They Affirm the Triumph of Good over Evil

Johansen believes that the respectability of Christian mysteries and their acknowledgment of God’s order in the universe - especially the acknowledgment that good will ultimately triumph over evil - set them apart from mere lightweight entertainment. She illustrates this using two of her own novels, Hawaiian Wildflower and Lilli's Song

In Hawaiian Wildflower, the eternal struggle between good and evil unfolds as a Texan wife’s seemingly perfect marriage is shaken when a pregnant Hawaiian woman arrives to claim her husband. In Lilli’s Song, the conflict is explored through contact between extraterrestrials - who may also be demons - and the residents of a small Texas town.

Potential New Favorites to Explore

The guide also features Johansen’s favorite mystery series by Tamar Myers, Terri Blackstock, and Vannetta Chapman, with links to her detailed reviews of each novel in the series. The reviews include downloadable character lists to help readers keep track of the characters and their roles within each story.

Betty Johansen has also written two other Christian mystery novels, Darkness Under His Feet and Out of Darkness, as well as a summary of Scripture, The Bible in Brief, and other works.

“Christian mysteries are fun. They’re entertaining. And enigmatic. But they’re not fluff,” Johansen writes. “As the readers live through the process of deepening their faith with the fictional characters, they have the opportunity to learn and grow too.”

In Betty Johansen's guide, you'll find mysteries that can satisfy your craving for brain candy and nourish your spirit at the same time.
