Detroit Situational Awareness Training: Learn Important Safety Techniques

Jul 18, 2024

Safe Sense (313-638-3600) based in Detroit, MI, teaches vital tips for learning safety situational awareness techniques in partnership with the National Safety Council.

In a perfect world, we could walk around anywhere with our heads in the cloud and listen to our favorite songs on full blast. However, as we move towards that dream, we must remain diligent to notice everything around us. For now, our heads need to remain on the ground and our ears perked to detect a potential attacker. This isn’t fearmongering: it’s teaching you resilience in a world that still dreams of peace.

Situational awareness as a defense tactic

Detroit-based hands-on safety consulting firm Safe Sense joins the National Safety Council to advocate situational awareness as a defense tactic against gun violence and other assaults.

As part of the safety initiative, the team will share important situational awareness techniques to help prevent gun violence victimization in the United States. Sharlene Burris, CEO of Safe Sense, explains that the company will be visiting the Detroit/Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties throughout the summer of 2024 to introduce the concept of “personal safety situational awareness” and offer clever and practical tips in developing a “safe sense” to avoid becoming an assault victim.

Why is situational awareness important?

Sadly, we hear a lot more gun-related violence during the summer - and while there are a billion and one ways to prevent this violence, the least talked about preventive method is situational awareness.

Burris explains that Safe Sense's partnership with the National Safety Council is intended to promote situational awareness as the first step to prevent criminals from targeting individuals who they deem vulnerable. The touring program will teach people from all walks of life to take a more active role in protecting themselves from becoming victims of gun violence, robberies, or physical attacks.

"The lack of safety situational awareness makes individuals vulnerable targets for theft, assault, and other dangers, including gun violence," Burris says.

It's worth noting that Safe Sense is not a self-defense company, nor does it teach people how to proactively disengage with a criminal. Rather, it promotes better awareness of your surroundings so you know exactly what to do to protect yourself if you notice abnormal and threatening behavior.

Safety consulting

Traditionally, the National Safety Council has focused on safety in the workplace. However, Burris believes that by incorporating safety self-empowerment into the NSC’s initiatives, more people will be able to reduce their risk of any assault, anywhere and anytime. Find out more about the consultancy at https://www.safesense.org

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Safe Sense is an informational resource and hands-on consulting firm that teaches individuals – from K-12 and college students to employees, field service workers, educators, and senior citizens – field-tested core personal safety principles, activities, and real-time applications rooted in common sense, situational awareness, and environmental mindfulness.

The team hopes to ignite every person’s “safe sense” – that primal instinct that recognizes immediate danger and makes quick and smart decisions to protect yourself.
