The Affordable Care Act has done its job when it comes to protecting low-income families from catastrophic healthcare expenses and premiums says Rick Thornton, a health insurance agent in El Paso.
El Paso Health Insurance and the people who have it can bet on one thing when it comes to the Affordable Care Act: the embattled law, despite its ongoing troubles in the court room and on Capitol Hill, has done a tremendous job protecting Americans from certain financial doom when they’ve face unexpected health problems.

According to a new study from JAMA Network Open, the ACA reduced the risk for catastrophic health expenses by more than 30 percent among U.S. adults who suffered traumatic injuries. On top of that, those who have health insurance in El Paso also saw that their out-of-pocket expenses were also reduced by as much as 30 percent. According to the study, of the 6,288 cases included in the analysis, researchers found the impact of the ACA was greatest for lowest-income Americans. In addition, low-income Americans saw their insurance premium costs drop by roughly 22 percent, but were not protected from catastrophic health costs. This is great news when you consider how much ACA, which is about to turn 10 years old, had divided lawmakers in terms of its effectiveness and overall impact on healthcare. There are ongoing battles in the court over its constitutionality, and eventually, a decision will be handed down by the nation’s highest court.
Rick Thornton, a health insurance agent in El Paso added that this is big news for anyone who has health insurance, as injuries such as this are never something you can prepare for — and the bills associated with finding the right healthcare can be astronomical. With total spending for premiums and out-of-pocket costs down, low-income families can finally focus on getting the care they and their families need rather than worrying about how much it will cost them.
