Empowering Guyanese Women Through Sustainable Nail Care Certification

Mar 27, 2025

Twenty-three women from seven regions in Guyana completed the NSI Caricom MasterClass, a three-day program focusing on eco-friendly nail techniques. Led by Regional NSI Educator Lexann McPhoy and Global Educators Darlene Tewitz and Katia Da Silva, participants gained certification in using HEMA-free NSI products.

On March 22, 2025, at the Ramada Princess Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana, twenty-three women from seven of the nation's ten administrative regions celebrated their graduation from the NSI Caricom MasterClass. This intensive three-day program equipped them with certifications in eco-friendly and HEMA-free NSI nail salon products, marking a pivotal step toward sustainable beauty practices in the Caribbean.

Comprehensive Training in Eco-Friendly Techniques

From March 20 to 22, participants engaged in a rigorous curriculum blending theoretical knowledge with practical application. Under the expert guidance of Regional NSI Educator Lexann McPhoy and Global Educators Darlene Tewitz from Canada and Katia Da Silva from South Africa, attendees delved into the science of acrylic and gel products. They then applied this knowledge in hands-on sessions, mastering the use of MMA-free and HEMA-free NSI products. Additionally, the program incorporated local educators, preparing them to teach secondary school students about eco-friendly nail salon services. https://lexannnsi.com/blog/f/empowering-guyanas-women-nsi-caricom-masterclass-graduation

Integrating Sustainability with Business Acumen

The MasterClass emphasized not only technical skills but also the integration of sustainable products and advanced techniques. Participants learned to enhance their services while promoting environmentally responsible practices. The curriculum also addressed essential business strategies, equipping attendees to navigate the evolving beauty industry landscape effectively.

Advocating for Health-Conscious Beauty Practices

Lexann McPhoy underscored the significance of this initiative, stating, "The NSI brand is utilized in leading nail technician educational institutions in the USA, the UK, and Europe. Guyana, with its growing expat community, has the opportunity to be at the forefront of beauty with health and wellness in mind." This certification empowers women entrepreneurs to establish sustainable businesses that offer safe, high-quality services to their clients.

Adapting to Economic Shifts in Beauty Services

In response to the changing economic landscape, beauty service providers are encouraged to diversify their business models. A McKinsey analysis suggests that nail salon owners and technicians should consider product sales and brand partnerships to enhance profit margins, potentially increasing net income by over twenty percent.
