A Bold Reimagining

The museum – based at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina - has been subject to a $3.5 million renovation and upgraded with exciting new visitor experiences. The reopening ceremony took place on the 15th of May, 2024 while the facilities are open to the public from Memorial Day Weekend on May the 25th. The collection is based onboard the USS Yorktown and its updated displays and interactive visitor experiences have been funded by the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership. Come and see for yourself!

Legacy

The museum tells the story of the Medal of Honor and its recipients, celebrating the legacy and core values that underpin the country's highest award for military valor. You now have the chance to see artifacts that have never been seen before by the public and they've been carefully chosen to help bring the stories of medal recipients to life for you and your group.

The Museum's Story

The venue first opened its doors in 1994 with a renovation following in 2007 which added engaging interactive features, light-filled towers, and individual galleries to commemorate American heroes. The 2024 version was conceived in collaboration with museum exhibit specialists M. Catton & Co. and was designed to encourage both physical interaction and personal introspection. The project was only made possible by the National Medal of Honor for Leadership's generous grant in 2023. The 2007 iteration had to be dismantled entirely for work to begin.

An Inspiring Journey

The reimagined museum takes you on a journey through the medal recipients' military training including those who fought in the civil war, both world wars, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, and the global war on terror. The collection preserves the legacy of 3536 medal recipients and 19 dual recipients.

Explore The Area

The Medal of Honor Museum is one part of the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum which also houses the USS Laffey destroyer and a Vietnam firebase experience. Why not make it a day trip to remember?

Thomas Mundell, president and chief executive officer of the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership, says, “Our Board of Directors agreed to fund the reimagined Medal of Honor Museum because we firmly believe the stories that are told within its walls will provide visitors with a deeper sense of what it means to be an American and provide inspiration for those who visit. Not everyone is called to the extremes of military service as the Recipients were, but this Museum shows that leadership can be nurtured and that we all have the ability to be heroes in our homes and our communities.”
