From Pivot to Lift & Slide Doors—How Reinventing the Door Adds Luxury to Homes

Jun 20, 2024

A door is a door – and that’s okay. But for a luxury home, you need THE door. Here are some styles that are currently popular.

While we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, no one said anything about the door. In fact, that’s probably one of the products that could use some reinvention and innovation - especially when it comes to luxury properties.

Panda Windows & Doors believes that there are currently three designs which are reinventing the boring old doors and turning them into grand entrances reminiscent of traditional homes in exotic locations like Ibiza, Bondi, and Rio.

Unconventional but Stylish Pivot Doors

Pivot doors differ from traditional hinge doors in that they rotate open around a hidden spindle located in the top and bottom of the frame. This removes the size and weight constraints of door jambs and gives designers the freedom to create doors that can accommodate very high entryways - think 24 feet or so. In fact, pivot doors are becoming a very popular choice for modern luxury homes due to their unique engineering and flexible style options.

If you adore a door, you may remember they were named the most innovative entry door in 2022 by Window + Door Magazine.

And it’s not hard to see why: they’re certainly eye-catching. A door that rotates open around an unseen hinge - pretty cool.

Of course, since we’re talking modern designs for modern homes, these doors can be customized to fit various architectural styles and equipped with the latest security features. From different materials - like aluminum, wood, and steel - to keypads and biometric locks, and of course energy-efficient glass, pivot doors are designed to make a statement.

Lift & Slide Doors Fit Any Size or Shape

Lift-and-slide doors - also designed to make a statement - are also intended to improve natural lighting, airflow, and seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces

Due to their lightweight construction and their lift-and-slide mechanism, these doors can support large glass panels - often up to 100 square feet. They can also accommodate different architectural styles - from multi-directional sliding doors to curving doors. And even hurricane-rated impact doors.

Just like pivot doors, these modern doors can be constructed with a variety of materials that are both durable and aesthetically pleasing - from aluminum, steel, and solid wood - and can include features like a thermally broken frame.

Elegant Folding Steel Doors

The ‘less is more’ trend isn’t going anywhere - at least not when door design is concerned. After all, there’s a reason why steel doors have stood the test of time: they’re elegant and sophisticated, and can fit seamlessly into any space.

And while they have retained their simplicity and clean lines, modern steel doors also incorporate modern features. From folding to swing and accordion styles, steel doors deliver timeless elegance and sophistication, while seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces and letting in natural light.

Like pivot and lift-and-slide doors, steel doors are also designed with luxury homes in mind; they can be up to 12 feet tall.
