According to City & State New York, the New York metropolitan area has an increasing number of open cybersecurity positions — approximately 20,000 job openings. With the latest launch, edX prepares you for work in this expanding industry.
The MicroBachelors Program is taught by Justin Cappos, an associate professor from NYU, and Aspen Olmsted, an adjunct professor from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. These expert instructors guide you through the basics of information security, network security, and penetration testing. Through the program, you will learn to implement security procedures and experience ethical hacking.
Critically, you will learn to create secure networks, too. This unit begins by exploring cryptographic algorithms before moving to more advanced perimeter security and IPv6 security topics. After that, you can test your security systems through penetration tests. These simulated attacks allow you to diagnose network flaws and vulnerabilities.
As with all of edX’s programs, you can work through the Cybersecurity MicroBachelors at your own pace. The course is one year long, and the courses typically take 8-10 hours per week — ideal if you’re concurrently working full-time. The organization also recommends that you have a basic understanding of networking and programming before registering. Upon completion, you will receive six academic credits from the Thomas Edison State University in New Jersey.
In 2012, edX was established as a non-profit organization by scientists from Harvard University and the Massasschustes Institute of Technology. With the latest announcement, they continue to provide quality and accessible online education to students like you across the globe.
“Back in 2012, we realized it was a time for a seismic shift in learning,” said a spokesperson for the organization. “By opening the classroom through online learning, we empower millions of learners to unlock their potential and become changemakers.”
