Sometimes it’s hard to stay Humble. This is a proud month for local soccer players and enthusiasts. If your kid wants to learn from the best – or has the right stuff to play in Spain – call Villarreal CF Houston Soccer Academy (281-962-4920).
It's hard to put into perspective for Americans the meaning of soccer for the rest of the world. For much of the planet, it's the only sport that counts - far and away the most popular game. In fact, do you know which American sports even figure in the top ten in global popularity? Only baseball and basketball!
Sorry, Cowboys!
Villarreal Houston, the Humble-based NE Houston sporting organization, in partnership with its parent soccer club in Spain, will now be conducting youth training sessions and tryouts in Humble, Kingwood, and Atascocita, TX.

During the month of May, 2022, Villarreal CF will be sending top academy coaches and recruiters to Houston from the main organization, a leading La Liga and UEFA Champions League soccer club. The Spanish coaches will visit the local Houston official partner academy in search of top potential youngsters to join the club, and to assist them in pursuing a career at the highest levels possible. Its professional team, Villarreal CF, defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League Final in 2021, a crowning achievement in the sport.
American soccer players are getting more interest from European clubs than ever before - and this recognition is significant, as play in Europe is considered the Gold Standard for competitive soccer. More than 70 Americans are now playing in various nations across Europe, in all divisions. American sports training culture, which celebrates team camaraderie and winning above all else - even from an early age - does not always comport with the European talent-spotter’s perspective, where recruiters are looking for individual athletes with the raw skills that can be honed in camps later on. Furthermore, neither Spain nor Europe as a whole work within systems analogous to the NCAA; a closer comparison might be minor league baseball.
The visiting coaches from Villarreal CF Academy will hold training sessions and soccer clinics for local academy participants, as well as provide training and feedback to local coaches. Coaches from Villarreal CF will also be on hand to support the Houston Official Academy during their tryouts in May.
Two players will be chosen by the local academy to travel to Villarreal, Spain, for a full week of cultural immersion and elite training. Both boys and girls born in the years 2008-2016 are eligible to participate in tryouts.
Villarreal CF Houston Academy is an official partner of one of the top Spanish clubs, Villarreal CF. The organization, which offers select youth soccer programs for boys and girls as young as 4 years old, affords kids the chance to visit Villarreal CF in Spain and play alongside the club’s premier Academy teams.
"We are so proud and happy to be able to give the kids of Houston this kind of an opportunity," said an organization spokesperson. "It’s so special - something anyone would remember for the rest of their lives."
This is the chance of a lifetime. And what if your kid is chosen to go to Spain? You never know. But it's the experience that counts: to learn from the best in the field, that's what you always want - for yourself and your children.
