As the revised app explains, Florence National Cemetery was established during the Civil War and is the final resting place for thousands of soldiers. Notable burials include Florena Budwin, who disguised herself as a man to serve alongside her husband, who was a captain in the federal forces.
Other historical attractions now detailed include hewn timber cabins from the antebellum (pre-Civil War) period, as well as a statue of renowned African American painter William H Johnson.
Developed by the SC Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, Discover South Carolina is the official platform for the state, with detailed resources for the mountains, midlands, and coast regions.
“It's almost impossible to go to any corner of South Carolina without finding evidence of how the state has been shaped by its diverse heritage and history,” the department continued. “For anyone planning a visit to Florence, we hope their experience is enriched by the memory of times gone by.”
