“Once a tree has been removed to ground level, our customers sometimes prefer a complete tree and stump removal.” said Jason Killick, Owner of Killick Tree Management & Arborist Qualification, Level 5 Certification holder. “Our tight access machine allows for easy access to most areas and we are able to stump grind up to 30mm below ground level.”
“We've completed many large and complex tree clearing projects with Jason and his team over the past few years and the service is second to none.” said Tim Cox, Director of Jorgensens Builders & 5 star Google reviewer. “On time, when promised. I won’t use anyone else!”
There are many reasons why residential & commercial property owners want tree stumps removed from their backyards. The Killick Tree Management team listed the following 3 common cases:
1. Safety - Kids who run around the yard might fail to see the stump and injure themselves. A decomposing tree stump also attracts bugs and pests.
2. Convenience - Tree stumps can obstruct daily activities. When cutting grass, they act as obstacles for lawn mower operators. Accidentally running into tree stumps can damage lawn mowers, so it makes perfect sense to remove them.
3. Ambience - Unless the backyard follows a particular wood-related style, it’s unlikely a decaying tree stump will add any aesthetic appeal to the landscape.
To address these 3 common cases, the Killick Tree Management team created the following list of 3 methods to remove tree stumps:
1. Digging
Digging is the manual method of tree stump removal. As this is a tedious method, it is only practical to use it for removing small stumps. The removal is done by digging around the stump to expose its roots. The roots are then axed off, making it easy for the stump to be levered out.
An excellent tool for this method is a mattock. A mattock has 2 different ends: the blunt end is used to dig through the earth, while the sharper end cuts through the roots as it digs.
Many property owners choose to hand over tree stump removals to a tree specialist, i.e. an arborist & tree surgeon. This way, it is a lot more efficient.
2. Grinding
A quicker, less labor-intensive method of tree stump removal is grinding. Grinding is suitable for larger tree stumps, as this method does not require levering out the stump.
The stump mill grinds backward and forward on the surface area of the stump, until it is reduced to a level below the ground. In addition to the earth mound that gathers around it, the stump mill grinds the roots glimpsing out from the stump.
Another advantage of the grinding method is its ability to remove stumps in a wide range of different environments, e.g. places close to walls and courses. The stump mills are manufactured in various shapes and sizes to work in a large variety of situations.
Many property owners leave the stump grinding to an arborist & tree surgeon, because tree specialists are a lot more efficient.
3. Chemical
This method is the least labor-intensive technique and a good economical option, making it an excellent choice for those looking to remove numerous tree stumps at once. Property owners would choose to remove stumps chemically if they can afford to wait a number of months or even years.
Evenly spaced holes are drilled into the tree stump, which are later filled with the stump remover. Note that older stumps tend to take less time to rot than more youthful tree stumps.
Due to the long duration of this method, removal by means of grinding is suggested for faster results.
As mentioned above, many property owners leave the stump grinding to an arborist & tree surgeon, because tree specialists are a lot more efficient.
