If you’re having difficulty getting the hang of the dink shot, don’t fret! Experience Pickleball has a guide teaching you how to successfully execute the challenging shot.
Given the speed at which pickleball is played, it's important that you know how to hit every shot so that you can dictate the pace of the game. To help you out, Experience Pickleball's new guide shows you how to hit one of the more difficult shots in pickleball—the dink shot.
The guide is aimed toward players who have a firm grasp of pickleball basics and are looking to add a more advanced shot to their repertoire. It provides a step-by-step breakdown of the dink shot, from approach to strike to follow-through.

The dink shot is difficult to learn and master, but when used well, you can catch your opponent off guard and change the trajectory of a point. With a dink shot, you deftly tap the ball over the net off a bounce from within your own kitchen, hoping to return the ball into your opponent’s kitchen with as little bounce as possible. Experience Pickleball’s guide teaches you the mechanics needed to effectively hit a dink shot and change the momentum of a match.
According to the guide, the key to hitting a successful dink shot is a gentle lifting motion. If too much power is generated in your wrist break and backswing it will cause the ball to go beyond the kitchen line. Moreover, the guide suggests that your paddle face should always be open and your swing should follow a low-to-high path generated by your shoulder.
The guide also recommends a few extra tips you can use when hitting a dink shot. Your follow-through should be short to prevent the ball from traveling too far. You should also use your legs rather than your back when getting set for a dink shot so that you retain your mobility. The guide also suggests that you get comfortable executing dink shots on both your forehand and backhand side for more flexibility in shot selection.
While they are similar shots, the guide is quick to point out the subtle differences between a dink shot and a drop shot. With drop shots, you're seeking a similar outcome to the dink shot, but you're executing the shot from the baseline instead of the kitchen line, which significantly impacts the mechanics of the shot.
“If you have dreams of elevating your game to 4.0 and above, you’re going to need as many techniques under your belt as possible,” said Damien Dansel, founder of Experience Pickleball. “The dink shot is one of the most important as it can place a tremendous amount of pressure on your opponent mid-match.”
For even more help with the dink shot, Experience Pickleball also included a tutorial video in the guide. The video, entitled "5 Keys To Successful Dinking," discusses a lot of the same mechanics as the guide, but provides visual demonstrations of how they should look. The instruction in the video is provided by experienced Primetime Pickleball coach Jordan Briones.
Moreover, if you're looking for advice on other types of shots, Experience Pickleball has several other guides available on its website. Recent guides have discussed basic shots such as serves and groundstrokes as well as more complicated shots like lobs, volleys, and drop shots.
