The issue of plastic pollution is a well-documented issue, with an estimated 12 million tonnes of plastic entering the world’s oceans every year. However, the impact of this plastic waste is often overlooked, with oceanic species such as the humble sea turtle being one of its primary victims.
As Ever Wonder Adventure explains, sea turtles are more than just the small reptiles we see on nature documentaries, they are a vital part of the marine ecosystem and are often nicknamed the ‘Guardians Of Biodiversity’. This name stems from the fact that sea turtles are fundamental for balancing the ocean’s food chain by regulating the growth of seagrass and jellyfish populations.
Ever Wonder Adventures outlines the reasons why plastic pollution is a threat to sea turtles, and the repercussions should the species become extinct. The organization explains that this disruption could cause a domino extinction effect on other marine species as jellyfish start to dominate the waters and crucial underwater habitats are lost.
