Nano Hearing Aids has developed a new style of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids with new auto-on and auto-off technology, and other smart use features designed especially for seniors.
Nano Hearing Aids has been listening to the feedback of hundreds of shoppers who have let the brand know what features can best support their hearing and comfort in older age.
As the National Institute on Aging recently reported, the people who are most likely to be living with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss—the kind of hearing loss Nano’s aids are designed for—are seniors, at a significant 33%. As such, as Nano’s newly appointed CEO Ryan F. Zackon said, it is important to the brand to cater more carefully to their older shoppers.
This desire has led to their implementation of smart new auto-on and auto-off technology, which they have piloted in one of their new models, called the Nano First Ear Plus CIC aids.

This technology, which is now common in earbud headphones but is novel for hearing aids, means that users only need to take the aids from their small, portable and magnetic charging case and put them in their ears to enjoy the fullness of sound. Then, at the end of the day, simply placing them back in the case is enough for them to start charging overnight for them to be ready for use the next day.
The OTC hearing aid makers hope that this smart but hidden technology feature will make their Nano First Ear Plus CIC aids a more user-friendly and commonsense model that doesn’t require any technology knowledge to be used.
Nano has also trialled another new technology feature: a simple, smart backlit display on the rechargeable case of the First Ear Plus CIC aids, which will show wearers the battery level of their aids as they put them in and when they are wearing them; taking the guesswork out of charging.
In listening to seniors, Nano Hearing Aids also identified that many seniors who are facing hearing loss also suffer from feelings of embarrassment, and do not want to be caught wearing hearing aids and therefore looking even older.
As such, the Nano First Ear Plus CIC has the brand’s smallest ever CIC or Completely In Canal design. This means that Nano has made the hearing aid’s receiver and transmitter even smaller, and designed them so they can sit snuggly within the ear canal. Additionally, the aids have a neutral flesh colored exterior façade to make them less visible to the eye when they are in place.
As Mr. Zackon said, “Our First Ear Plus CIC OTC Hearing Aids have been designed especially for seniors who are looking for a style that is easy to charge and easy to use, every day – and it arrives all in our smallest model yet.”
Despite these new advancements, Nano is currently retailing First Ear Plus CIC at their most affordable and accessible price tag, at $297. As Nano’s CEO explained, the company is making every effort possible to keep technological innovation high and costs low, in order to accommodate the 80% of seniors who The National Council on Aging (NCOA) say are increasingly struggling with the current cost of living.
