Nestled in the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest, this top-rated restaurant offers European-inspired cuisine to locals, tourists, and guests of the nearby Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast properties. Located in the Arenal Volcano National Park, it’s the perfect place to stay and dine.
If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable dining experience in Costa Rica, you’ve found it at The Caballo Negro restaurant at the Lucky Bug Bed and Breakfast!
My words can’t do it justice. You need to see it to truly appreciate the beauty of this place. Check out their website at https://luckybugcr.com
As someone with more than my fair share of frequent flyer miles under my belt, it takes a lot for me to be truly blown away by a place. Particularly one which seems to offer the anachronistic - German food in the Costa Rican rainforest? Really?!
But, wow! My skepticism was entirely misplaced. The Caballo Negro offers that rare balance of familiar flavors from home blended seamlessly with the light, fresh fruit, and vegetables that make Costa Rican cuisine so appealing. Ideal for a traveler like me, who does (every so often) crave that little taste of home.
And homemade is definitely the vibe here. Owner Monika Krauskopf makes her own corned beef and sauerkraut from scratch. And if that's not enough to whet your appetite, the restaurant also serves up a selection of salads, pasta dishes, and freshly made fruit smoothies.
But it's not just the food that makes the Caballo Negro a must-visit destination. As you dine, you can enjoy the wildlife that frequents the surrounding rainforest and small, private lake. From howler monkeys to toucans, tanagers, and hummingbirds, there's no shortage of stunning wildlife to admire as you savor your meal. Thankfully, the iguanas kept a safe distance from my delicious French toast breakfast!
The decor is, quite simply, stunning. The dining room is uniquely decorated with artworks from the adjoining gallery, where you can also buy original works by local artists to take home as souvenirs.
I was also lucky enough to stay one night in one of the Lucky Bug B&Bs. The nature-themed rooms and authentic Costa Rican decor make it the perfect holiday home for couples, families, and the odd wayward explorer, like myself.
The private rainforest trails and immersive calm of the nearby lake also make the property ideal to use as a retreat for larger parties, with group bookings accepted in advance.
Consistently rated one of the top B&Bs in Costa Rica, the Lucky Bug B&Bs have received Trip Advisor’s Traveler's Choice Award many years in a row, which is awarded only to the top 1% of properties in the world. I’m not surprised. I don’t think I could top it for atmosphere, food, or location.
From the delicious European-inspired cuisine to the stunning wildlife and unique decor, this restaurant is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Costa Rica. Book now at https://luckybugcr.com
