The company has announced the launch of its Cape Town office to raise awareness of opportunities for African entrepreneurs in cleantech fields.
As Africa’s “tech capital,” Cape Town is the ideal location for a cleantech incubator like Hatchery. Did you know that in 2020, the city’s tech start-ups received $88 million in investments? Cape Town is also home to the majority of South Africa’s venture capital firms and developers, and its universities offer some of the best training in digital skills.
The new office supports five cleantech projects. The Pulse project provides smart utility metering in developing economies. SwiftPower is a technology solution to upgrade utility meters. Oasis is a blockchain exchange funding small-scale solar projects in Africa. PushMoney is a platform supporting mobile orders and transactions. Lastly, Pawa is a platform providing free solar energy to impoverished communities.
As an incubator of cleantech startups, Hatchery is invested in technologies that increase productivity or profitability while reducing resource consumption or pollution. For example, the Cape Town office’s Pulse project uses IoT sensors to meter energy and water. The Oasis funds solar projects with the hyper-security of the blockchain and uses automation to reduce overhead costs.
Jon Bøhmer, Hatchery’s Norwegian investor, is a serial entrepreneur with expertise in cleantech and multimedia and 30 years of international experience. He launched the incubator to utilize his expertise in serving multiple companies at the same time. The idea of an incubator, or hatchery, particularly resonated with him, since he had grown up on a chicken farm.
The Managing Director of the Cape Town office, Chwayita Nqiwa-Twalo, said: “It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to identify, build, and support these exciting entrepreneurial brands! I’m passionate about engaging with inspirational founders and helping to turn their vision into reality!”
Do you believe that solutions to global problems without borders shouldn't have incubators with borders? Do you want a way out of the "work-work balance" so you can take on your project full-time, without the worry of making difficult life decisions?
