Immersive reading engages your child's eyes and ears by providing integrated and aligned word-for-word human narration to accompany the text. The WholeReader app employs this method of reading because it has been proven to help students retain new vocabulary more quickly and effortlessly.
According to a 2018 Microsoft study, students who partook in 30 minutes of immersive reading a day over three months surpassed the reading levels of their peers by almost a full academic year. Another study suggests that students who read close to 2 million words per year outside of school are more likely to end up in the 90th percentile.
With the WholeReader app, your kid can easily reach 2 million words a year. They will need to take an initial placement test to gauge their reading level. Once they finish the test, they gain access to the entire WholeReader library, including a “Suggested Books” carousel tailored to their reading level. Every two months they get the opportunity to retake the placement test.
The app also lets you assign daily reading assignments for your child to complete—Firm Foundation Academy recommends 45 minutes each day. As they read, a timer at the bottom of the screen tracks their active reading time. These numbers are then compiled into a report that is sent to you at the end of each week.
"We want to make reading fun and engaging for your child while also increasing their speed, comprehension, and retention," explains the company. "The app is great for you, too, as it provides an easy way of creating a reading curriculum that you can monitor." With the data and feedback you receive, you can tweak the program to best suit your child’s development.
The WholeReader app puts a vast library of books in your child's palm. With thousands of books to choose from—and hundreds more being added weekly—there is no shortage of material for your child to choose from. The books are all narrated by professional voice actors so the material stays fresh and exciting; however, there is the option to jump back and forth between books if your child prefers.
An 8-year-old WholeReader student said: “I had difficulty in English class. After two months of reading every day for one hour with my mother, I was able to catch up with my classmates.”
A non-profit organization, Firm Foundation Academy started the WholeReader app to improve literacy and critical thinking through immersive reading. The app is available in the app stores and through web browsers. A version for adults is also available featuring novels, university textbooks, cookbooks, and more.
