Worried about the environmental impact of your daily coffee habit? Check out this people-powered Kickstarter campaign for Takebacks, an initiative that aims to reduce waste from single-use cups.
While you probably know single-use coffee cups aren’t great for the environment, they continue to be used unabated. What if you could simply bring in your used cup and have it replaced with a clean, reusable one for your next coffee? Introducing, Takebacks.
By backing the campaign, you can support the distribution of reusable cups to coffee shops across the country so that you can enjoy your morning cup of joe guilt-free. Go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/takebacks/takebacks-cups-network to find out more.
According to One Planet Network, approximately 500 billion single-use coffee cups are discarded annually worldwide, with this number expected to increase as single-use cups become more readily available in low- and middle-income countries. A majority of these cups are lined with plastic, making them difficult to recycle.
Periva’s Takebacks campaign aims to offer an eco-friendly alternative by creating a network of reusable coffee cups at participating cafes. Here’s how it works:
Each cup only needs to be reused 12 times to become carbon neutral. The cups are also made in the USA with high-quality, BPA-free plastic and are dishwasher-safe for durability and ease of reuse.
The cups also feature QR codes that you can scan with the Periva app. With the app, you can create a unique profile to track your environmental impact from participating in the initiative. You can also view data on your local cafe’s impact and information about the lifecycle of each cup.
Alongside environmental benefits, participating businesses can also benefit financially. Takebacks explains that washing a reusable cup typically costs a business around 10-15 cents, while single-use cups often cost 20 cents or more per piece. Additionally, participation in the initiative may help to attract customers as a growing number of people seek out businesses that prioritize sustainability.
“Takebacks isn’t just about cups—it’s about creating a cultural shift,” says a spokesperson for Periva. “By backing the Takebacks Kickstarter campaign, you can help create a critical mass of participation that will encourage coffee shops to join this zero-waste initiative.”
