As a homeowner in Colorado, I can guess that you probably have one of four materials on your roof right now, shingles, shakes, metal, or concrete. The real question though, is do you have the best option for your home, based on your local climate and other options?
Every option is unique... and some are better than others. Mostly it depends on where your house is, what your local weather is like, and whether you'd like to save costs up-front, or in the long-term.
While asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material throughout most of the USA, they also have one of the shortest lifespans. Asphalt shingles can last up to 30 years, metal sheeting can last up to 70 years, and concrete up to 100 years. However, the optimal material for your home is based on more than just their lifespan, it can vary based on several important factors.
Asphalt shingles offer several other advantages in terms of cost and ease of installation, but since they are susceptible to damage from extreme weather such as hail or strong winds, they may need frequent repairs in some climates. However, due to their low initial cost and easy repairability, they are a popular option in most areas.
Wooden shakes offer similar durability and costs, but the report explains they also suffer from the same extreme weather issues, and can also be in danger from rat or insect infestations. Wooden shakes have largely fallen out of use in most areas with extreme weather, though they can still be found in milder climates, and are often used to preserve a vintage aesthetic.
If you have a small operating budget but can handle regular repairs, shakes or shingles may be what you're looking for. On the other hand, if you have a higher operating budget right now, and would like to cut down on repairs down the road, you might want to consider metal or concrete.
Concrete roofs are much less common, but experts suggest they can last for up to 100 years with minimal maintenance. However, due to the weight of concrete, these roofs require additional support, and may have higher installation costs than the more common, lighter materials. You should definitely speak to an expert before deciding on a concrete roof, unless your home is already built for one.
In my personal opinion, the best option available today is metal roofing, and it's one of the most popular options in the last decade. These metal roofs are considered environmentally friendly, since they use recyclable materials and improve home heating and cooling efficiency, and are known to last for up to 70 years with minimal maintenance.
They also come in every color and style, which is nice.
Since the most efficient roofing solution can vary widely by location, roof style, and several other factors, there's really only one way to find the best, most efficient, long-lasting, and affordable option for your personal situation.
You'll have to talk to an expert, but don't worry, that's easy!
As Apex Roofing & Restoration explains it, “Your local climate plays a significant role in determining the best roofing material. For instance, metal roofs are excellent for areas prone to wildfires due to their fire resistance. Consulting with a roofing expert like Apex can help you understand which materials will offer the best performance for your specific climate conditions.”
