If the smell of fresh bed linen has you singing ‘I just wanna stay in that lavender haze’… why not turn your home into a ‘lavender haze’ with essential oils?
Nothing quite like the smell of fresh bedsheets, am I right? You love it! The cat loves it! (well, if they're anything like my cat...) Everyone loves the smell of freshly washed bedsheets - and clothes. That is until you stop to think what that smell is made of - what chemicals you're actually inhaling while you get 'high' on that relaxing lavender scent. If you're concerned - you're not alone.
And you're not wrong to be concerned, either, but more on that later. First, I'd like to let you know that you can replace the chemical smell with an equally - if not more! - refreshing, but not hazardous, smell of essential oils. All you need to get started are a few easy essential oil spray recipes.
While, of course, not all fabric softeners are super unhealthy to the point of causing serious harm, the majority are indeed concerning. You can check the Environmental Working Group website for specific brands - some of them are perfectly fine. Others... well, 72.1% of tested fabric softeners and dryer sheets were ranked as high to highest concern...
Yeah, not great by any measure.
It's no wonder people are increasingly looking for alternatives that are not only better for you - and the environment! - but also, often, better for your pocket too. Essential oil sprays are one of the alternatives you can try.
And when it comes to bedding, there's one specific type of essential oil that's... well, the obvious choice.
Lavender! Of course it's lavender. Lavender is calming, refreshing, relaxing - and it can actually eliminate odors. It's no wonder people use lavender essential oil for pillow mist, bedtime room spray, body spray, and much more!
Here are just a few recipes you can try:
Clean Linen Spray: Mix 8 drops of lavender, 8 drops of grapefruit, and 3 drops of tea tree essential oil - spray it on your bedsheets and enjoy a blissful night's sleep.
Sleepy Time Pillow Mist: For this one, you only need two essential oils: 15 drops of lavender and 5 drops of Roman chamomile - spray it on your pillow 10 minutes before bedtime and enjoy.
Pure Lavender: As you'd imagine this is just lavender essential oil mixed with a few other ingredients you need for all recipes. It's the easiest one to make, it smells great, and it also protects you from insects - mosquitos and flies hate the smell of lavender!
Since we're talking cleanliness and freshness here, it's time to come clean: I am not an essential oils expert - just a fan of the art, so to speak. I wanted to talk about this topic, but I didn't want to give you wrong info, of course, so I 'borrowed' it from an actual expert: Jennifer Lane, creator of the Loving Essential Oils blog.
If you're interested in essential oils, that's where you can find all kinds of recipes you can easily make at home - whether you're looking for something refreshing for your home or something to boost productivity at the office (or home office).
You'll also learn what exactly goes into an essential oil spray - because, spoiler alert: it's not just essential oil drops.
