Old times die hard, and some never fade away. The vintage hot rod Gassers of the 1950s are still alive today in the memories of drag racing and automotive fans. The Gassers may appear out of date, but they played a key role in inspiring the use of large, powerful engines and drawing in sponsors. Gassers were classified as hot rods and owe their name to gasoline based engines, rather than methanol or nitromethane. The cars originate from the 1933 Willys coupes and pickups that were popular in their days, but were never built in large numbers. Apart from the Gassers, the drag strips also witnessed the Willys coupes made race ready with Roots supercharger engines and fuel injection with methanol or nitromethane.
