Anxiety is a common emotion in modern times - and for many people, it’s enough to impact their quality of life, preventing them from being the productive, joyful people they are meant to be. According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, 40 million Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder, which is nearly 1 out of every 5 adults.
I'm Dr. Tracy Thomas, PhD, the world’s first Emotional Scientist, renowned psychologist, and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Commitments: A Step-by-Step Guide to Personal Transformation. I have observed that although most people are familiar with the symptoms of anxiety - such as feeling on edge, difficulty concentrating, and chronic fear and worry - they often aren’t aware of all of the repercussions anxiety can have on them financially, both in terms of what they lose in productivity, and what they can gain from being at their utmost emotional capacity.
Time and Money Spent in Chronic Anxiety
Let's say you have been experiencing anxiety 10 hours a day for 10 years, that would be approximately 36,000 hours in anxiety, and the cost of anxiety is that it's lowering your functionality, performance, productivity, output, income, interpersonal capacity, relational capacity, concentration and follow-through capacity. Even the cost of treatment for anxiety can add up. There’s the cost of medications and talk therapy, as well as the time spent in therapy and getting medications.
Conservatively, anxiety could be costing you $10 an hour in lost productivity for each hour you are struggling. That adds up to $364,000 over a decade, and for most people, the cost would be far more. On the other hand, when you are free of anxiety, you are able to be productive and focused. That means being able operate at top functionality, with the ability to have an intention, focus on it, carry it out, create an outcome, an income, a result all the way across the board. If you're operating at your top capacity, you could potentially make $100 an hour, that's $3.6 million over that same period of time. That's not even counting the health piece - the health of your relationships, ability to be with a great partner, be a parent, and so on.
